Rosenwald Elementary/ Middle School 2009 Profile
Rosenwald Elementary/ Middle School is located in the historic town of Society Hill. The school consists of four buildings, a new early childhood wing, an intermediate grades wing and a middle level grades building. All students will be exposed to fine arts in our exploratory wing.
A K-8 school, Rosenwald is the only one of its kind in the Darlington County School District. It offers the best of a community school atmosphere with great community support, parent interest, and school pride. Academically, Rosenwald has joined other exemplary schools in the state by using the Teacher and Student Advancement Program(TAP) model of instruction. During the 2008-2009 school year, we installed a middle school computer lab, reached 100% with classrooms equipped with technology including LCD projector and computers, and renovated our science lab in the exploratory wing.
With 181 students, Rosenwald’s principal, master teachers and career teachers are able to devote extraordinary amounts of energy and attention to the individual needs of our students. To balance the challenging instruction and develop the whole child, Rosenwald students participated in newly formed extra- curricular and character building activities including Boy's Basketball (reinstituted after 25 years), a jazz band program, an Academic Challenge Team, the Ambassadors Program, a Jr. BETA Club, and Running Club. Our students placed 1st in the Middle School Division of 2009 Coker College 5K Run and 2nd in the Elementary Division. In 2009-2010, we will add an Academic Challenge team for grades 3-5.
The Rosenwald Eagles soared in the 2008-2009 school year! We made significant progress academically as measured by MAP in both Elementary and Middle School grades. At least 32% of students advanced to the next performance level in ELA and Math. Primary grades showed gains in reading as measured by Dominie and MAP. The school had a successful second year implementing the nationally recognized TAP. We implemented Project ACTS, a Habits of Mind philosophy, in 5K and 1st grade. We participated in a variety of workshops, programs, and training to make us the best school around.
As a school, we increased the use of positive behavior strategies through the REMS system, a monetary system for good grades, a yearlong service learning project supporting Relay for Life, and use of Triple P with parents. Parents and community attended school-community events including Family Reading, Math and Science Nights in record breaking numbers. In addition to having a thriving School Improvement Council (SIC), we remained active members of the National Network of Partnership Schools (NNPS).
Just as the students experienced new aspects of 21st Century schooling, teachers excelled at Rosenwald. We are home to not only the 2008-2009 Darlington County School District Teacher of the Year but also the Darlington County School District Outstanding First Year Teacher of the Year. One of our master teachers was featured in Education Week and presented at the National TAP Conference and South Carolina's TAP University. Several teachers began or completed advanced degrees this year. At Rosenwald, we are home of the mighty EAGLES and we are Soaring to Greater Heights Because Learning Has No Limits.
