Rosenwald Elementary/ Middle School 2011 Profile

Rosenwald Elementary/ Middle School is located in the historic town of Society Hill.    At Rosenwald, our goal is to maintain a student-centered learning environment where students excel academically and develop their talents and interests.” A K-8 school, Rosenwald is the only one of its kind in the Darlington County School District.  It offers the best of a community school atmosphere with great community support, parent interest, and school pride.

The instructional initiative of Rosenwald’s team this year has been improving student achievement using sound instruction and a laser- like focus on assessment.  The teachers continuously analyzed their results and made plans for re-teaching and differentiating instruction.  Additionally, we continued to use benchmarks and MAP to monitor student progress toward state objectives.

With regard to other school wide initiatives, our students benefit from both academic and behavioral incentives.  Students participate in our reading program as we increase our circulation of school media center resources and use of classroom libraries.  Additionally, we place challenges for math and science benchmarks on students in grades 5-8.   Incentives range from celebrity status on bulletin boards to giant candy bars to T-shirts.   We place heavy emphasis on independent reading in all classes, and our teachers have committed to a vertically aligned writing plan with goals for speaking, writing and presenting for every grade.

Students have to exhibit “excellent eagle” behavior on a daily basis to be eligible for behavioral incentives.  Our school wide management plan includes Eagle tickets, Fun Fridays, and school wide drawings coordinated by the school discipline committee and teacher teams.  Likewise our school- community relationship is strong.  Serving as Greater Heights mentors, the community is supportive and invested in our school program.  The BETA students continue to work diligently with service learning efforts to provide food to our elderly residents in Society Hill.  We are also the recipient of HungerBusters Grant for approximately all of the student body.

In 2010, the Rosenwald Eagles met the national standard of Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP).  In the state accountability system we received Report Card Ratings of Below Average for our Elementary and   Middle Schools. Our Improvement Ratings were Average for Middle and Below Average for Elementary.

With 170 students, Rosenwald’s principal, master teacher and career teachers are able to devote extraordinary amounts of energy and attention to the individual needs of our students.   To balance the challenging instruction and develop the whole child, Rosenwald students are offered a number of  extra- curricular and character building activities including Jr. BETA Club, Boy's Basketball, a jazz band program, , the Ambassadors Program, and Running Club.

With the commitment to improved instruction and thus, increased academic achievement, REMS is embracing proven strategies and putting forth the necessary effort to be a premier school.  We continue to “Soar to Greater Heights Because Learning Has No Limits”.
